Storage is a careful process for your all-important belongings. So, storing things should be done in the right way, the first time. When storing furniture you should:

Take the furniture apart, if possible, make sure to mark the parts so you can easily reassemble them, you should leave covers/sheets on furniture (if you have any) as this will protect your furniture. Also, put any screws or bolts you have left from disassembling the furniture into a plastic bag and tape the bag somewhere inconspicuous (so you do not leave tape marks) on the furniture.

After you have disassembled a table you should put any screws or bolts in a plastic bag and tape the plastic bag to the underside of the table tops.

For beds, make sure to tie the bed rails together with rope.

For chairs, you should cover the legs and arms with bubble wrap/newspaper, and also stack them seat-to-seat with paper or cloth between them.

Between the floor of the storage unit you should lie a pallet or some type of plastic sheet.

When storing precious and breakable items you should:

Put paper into empty, top and bottom spaces in carton.
Tip bowls, saucers and plates on their sides, and use a dish pack divider for enhanced security.
Wrap the items separately prior to storing in dish pack box.
Wrap items with bubble wrap.

When storing paper items such as books and files you should:

For your important documents, we recommended file boxes.
Place plastic sheeting on top of pallets to protect from moisture.
Fill any empty space in your boxes and put the books in flat to prevent movement.

When storing large appliances and equipment you should:

Leave door slightly ajar. Make sure to clean and your refrigerator or freezer before storing, and moisture and mildew may damage it. It is best to leave the door slightly open. You should also defrost your refrigator and freezer.
Drain your washing machine.
Tie down all doors and parts that are moveable.
Store items inside your larger appliances.

When storing clothing you should:

Use wardrobe boxes which allow you to store your clothing on hangers and save the shape of garments.
Leave smaller garments in drawers.

When storing kitchenware you should:

Cushion the space between each piece of kitchenware with newspaper.

When storing lamps you should:

Wrap both the shade and the base in bubble wrap and store in boxes.

When storing tools and gardening equipment you should:

Tie all long-handled tools together (i.e. hoes, shovels). Pack hammers and other small tools in boxes.
